10 must-see destinations on a trip to Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Hoi An and Phu Quoc are among the 10 destinations that Canadian publication The Travel recommends for a trans-Vietnam trip.


Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and a great place to experience its diverse culture, cuisine and history. You can visit the Museum of Ethnology to learn about the history and cultures of the nation’s ethnic groups.

The Travel notes that Vietnam is “an astonishingly favored country.” One trip is not enough to explore it or appreciate its beauty.

Ba Be National Park in the northern Bac Kan Province is a paradise for nature lovers. You can book a guided tour to admire its rocky mountains, dense forests and more than 1,200 species of plants and animals. You can also take a boat ride on Ba Be Lake, explore caves or watch flying squirrels, pangolins and monkeys.

Trang An in the northern Ninh Binh Province is a scenic area of more than 2,000 hectares with limestone mountains, natural caves, swamps, and rivers. The best way to enjoy its beauty is to take a boat tour on one of the three main routes that will take you to caves, shrines and the place where the movie “Kong: Skull Island” was shot.

Hue is a captivating ancient city with pagodas and art deco mansions that attract history and architecture buffs. You can visit the Thien Mu Pagoda on the northern banks of the Perfume River, one of the landmarks of Hue.

Hoi An in Quang Nam Province is an old trading port that has been preserved almost intact. It is a frequent name in the lists of the most beloved Vietnamese destinations.

You can stroll along its winding streets lined with Chinese-style shops and Japanese merchant houses, admire the hundreds of multi-colored silk lanterns lighting the streets at night, take a boat ride on the Hoai River, and enjoy the local cuisine.

My Son Sanctuary is in Quang Nam Province, 70 kilometers from Da Nang and 40 kilometers from Hoi An. It is a Hindu sacred site of the ancient Champa Kingdom.

Tourists can get a glimpse of the past when they visit the ancient My Son Temples, built by the Champa people as long ago as in the fourth century.

Ho Chi Minh City is a place “brimming with energy and discoveries in every corner,” according The Travel, which called the city “a hotspot for history buffs” with the presence of the War Remnants Museum.

The city also has a unique blend of diverse cultures and religions. You can explore famous religious buildings such as the Mariamman Hindu Temple, 1744 Giac Lam Pagoda and the Notre Dame Cathedral (pictured).

The Cu Chi Tunnels are a must-visit for history lovers. The tunnels were built during the war against the French circa 1948. In the beginning they were only short passages.

Phu Quoc in Kien Giang Province is another must-visit destination. The island has stunning beaches. You can explore Khem beach, Sao beach, Hon Thom Island, and more.
